But what if the problem isn't that you're too sensitive? What if, as an intuitive, empathic, or spiritually aware person, you're picking up on things that others don't notice?

Many people spend years trying to become less sensitive.

They tell themselves they need thicker skin, stronger boundaries, or to stop feeling so much.

And what if some of that information isn't just emotional or psychological? It is psychic or intuition?

Are You A Person Who Naturally Receives More?

Research suggests that some people process their experiences more deeply than others.

  • They notice subtle changes in mood, relationship dynamics, body sensations, and their environment.
  • They often reflect more deeply on conversations, experiences, and emotions long after an event has passed.

In my work, I see this all the time.

  • These are often the people who sense when something is "off" before anyone has said a word.
  • They notice changes in energy, pick up on unspoken emotions, and often have strong intuitive abilities.

Some would call this sensitivity.

I would say that many of these people are simply receiving more information.

  • Sometimes that information comes through the body.
  • Sometimes it comes through emotions.
  • Sometimes it comes through intuition.
  • And sometimes it arrives as a quiet knowing that cannot easily be explained.

The challenge isn't the sensitivity itself.

The challenge is learning how to work with what you're receiving.

This Is Why Your Sensitivity Is Not Weakness

One of the most interesting findings from the research is that highly sensitive people aren't simply more affected by difficult experiences.

They are also more affected by positive ones.

In other words, sensitivity amplifies experience.

A difficult environment may impact them more deeply.

But healing, support, love, therapy, spiritual growth, and healthy relationships can also create profound transformation.

The same openness that allows a person to perceive more of life can also become one of their greatest strengths.

Sensitivity Overwhelm Doesn't Mean You're Broken

Many sensitive people assume that because they feel overwhelmed, something is wrong with them.

But overwhelm is often a sign that your system is processing a lot of information.

  • Imagine two people walking through the same room.
  • One notices three things.
  • The other notices thirty.
  • Neither person is right or wrong.
  • One is simply taking in more data.

This is particularly true for intuitive and spiritually aware people.

Many spend years trying to shut down what they are receiving because they don't understand it.

The goal isn't to stop receiving.

The goal is to develop the capacity to stay present with what you're receiving.

Discernment Transforms Your Sensitivity Into A Gift

One of the biggest mistakes sensitive people make is assuming that because they feel something, they automatically understand it.

Feeling and understanding are not the same thing.

You might:

  • Feel someone else's anxiety and think it's your own.
  • Feel excitement and mistake it for fear.
  • Receive an intuitive impression and interpret it through old wounds.

Sensitivity becomes a gift when it is paired with discernment.

The more present you become, the more clearly you can recognise what belongs to you, what belongs to someone else, and what your deeper wisdom is trying to show you.

A Simple Reflection Exercise

Take a moment this week and ask yourself:

  • What if my sensitivity isn't a problem to solve?
  • What if it's a capacity that needs to be understood and developed?

Notice what changes when you stop fighting your sensitivity and start becoming curious about it instead.

Sometimes the path isn't about receiving less.

It's about learning how to hold more.

If you've spent years feeling deeply, sensing things others don't, or questioning whether your intuition is real, you're not alone.

One of the most important skills a sensitive or spiritually aware person can develop is discernment — the ability to understand what you're feeling, what belongs to you, what belongs to someone else, and what your deeper wisdom is trying to show you.
